The memory is clear. It was a Sunday morning and our pastor had something personal he wanted to tell our congregation. His daughter, Katie, was pregnant. Everyone knew Katie wasn’t married. Most certainly, pastor explained, the circumstances were not as God intended. He and his family were surprised and disappointed. But, said pastor, “I am a grandfather.” He and his family promised to give their daughter and grandson all the support they needed.
Myth: Abortion laws were of rather recent origin, and were adopted to protect women from dangerous surgery, not to protect unborn children.
Reality: Throughout almost all stages of history in nations influenced by Christianity, and in other nations as well, abortion has been strongly condemned by the religious and political leadership of these nations.
Christian teachers and most especially parents have the privileged opportunity to instruct children with the Truth that will guide and protect them throughout their lives. The Truth is God’s Word. God’s Word, beginning in Genesis, has a lot to say to modern parents and their children. It explains our origin, why we were created, and how to live.
Why not just live together? Because such living is impatient and seeks its own way. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5) New life in Christ calls for trust in the Creator of marriage—God himself.
(2 Corinthians 5:17) God’s love “rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:6b-7)
