Cherish the children. What does it mean to cherish? It means to “hold dear,” to “treat with affection,” and to “nurse.” Some might even say to “love.” To cherish children, then, is to love them, to hold them dear, to nurse them, and to treat them with affection. Cherishing is not only an action, but also an attitude. For all action begins first in the heart and mind.
We know how to welcome the important and great members of our society. However, do we know how to welcome those not so important in our culture?
Matthew 18:10 – This is the passage we think of when we leave baby alone in the crib. It’s the passage we think of when the excited four-year-old just has to lead on the hike. It’s the passage we think of when “sixteen” goes out the door with a set of keys and a new license. Perhaps it’s also the passage we remember when one goes out to war, when one stays behind at the college dorm, or when two stand together at the altar.
Who is it we are to cherish? Who are we to love and hold and protect? Who are the children?

Brothers and sisters say it in a moment of jealousy. Perhaps you have said it to your brother or sister. “Mom always liked you best,” or “You always were dad’s favorite.” I suppose parents can sometimes show favoritism. What about God? Does He show favoritism? Can I point at you or you or you and say, “You always were God’s favorite”? The answer is “Yes!”

Our culture doesn’t welcome children very much. They are looked upon as a burden, both financially and emotionally. They take too much time from careers and leisure activities. Lutherans For Life is different. We welcome children because we know that children are not just haphazard “products of conception.” No, they are people known by God before the world began, people for whom Christ died, people whom God wants as part of His family. Lutherans For Life welcomes children because they are precious to God.
There is more than one reason to care for and protect the lives of children, whether they have been born or are still living and growing in their mothers’ wombs.
