Sin brings death and destruction. The sin of abortion brings death to a unique, unborn child. It also brings destruction to other lives-destruction of relationships, of families, of faith. Being a neighbor seemed important to Jesus. According to Him, the second greatest commandment ever given is “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The only thing greater than this is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:28-31). Being a neighbor ranks pretty high! Asking—as Mr. Rogers so melodiously did—“Won’t you be my neighbor?” is a grand request indeed.
Christians say it too. “I’m personally opposed to abortion, but …” A lack of understanding of what abortion is and what abortion does leads to such thinking. One of the reasons for the lack of understanding is that many in the Church whitewash the truth about abortion. Some do it actively and whitewash abortion with religiously nice sounding words. Others do it passively and whitewash abortion with religious silence.
There is hope in Christ for those who grieve the loss of a child through abortion.
Dear Friends of Christ, you remember the old saying, “Which came first? The chicken or the egg?” That poses a question for us this morning … “When does life begin?”
A young man was quite literally whistling while he worked. The first verse of his carefree tune began, “I’m so happy and here’s the reason why, Jesus took my burden all away.” Even without the words, the joy was evident prompting a co-worker to ask, “What are you so happy about?” This young man was expressing one of the great truths of this Epiphany season.
In a college classroom a discussion over the death penalty was taking place. One young man who made it quite clear he had no problems with abortion spoke out strongly against the death penalty. When asked by another student why he took such a stance he said: “I am against the death penalty because life is sacred.” The discussion continued with the effort to clarify when this sacred thing called life begins. I think we can see from this example just how important it is that the Biblical understanding of life and its origin be the foundation of our understanding of the sacredness of life.
