“Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be a Voice for Life at the March for Life,” I said as I spoke to hundreds of people who had gathered on the St. Louis Arch grounds some years ago. Within minutes they would be boarding buses and traveling to Washington, D.C., to participant in the March for Life.

“Would you do me a favor?” I asked them. “Tell those you meet that God Loves Life! He loves the baby in the womb, and the special child who has Down syndrome. He loves the person who is in the nursing home and those in the hospital on life support.”

Have you ever thought that you and I are kind of like David as he fought Goliath? Here is what God’s Word says about Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:4c-7, 10-11 (from GOD’S WORD):

“He was ten feet tall. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he wore a bronze coat of armor scales weighing 125 pounds. On his legs he had bronze shin guards and on his back a bronze javelin. The shaft of his spear was like the beam used by weavers. The head of his spear was made of 15 pounds of iron. The man who carried his shield walked ahead of him … The Philistine added, ‘I challenge the Israelite battle line today. Send out a man so that we can fight each other.’ When Saul and all the Israelites heard what this Philistine said, they were gripped with fear.”

The people of God were “gripped with fear”! That is, all of them except young David. You know the rest of the story. David defeated the giant with a slingshot and a few rocks. But, why was David willing to fight this giant? And why wasn’t he afraid? Because he knew God was with him! The same reason you and I are not afraid to stand up for life today!

David was willing to fight Goliath because he knew God was with him. Today, those involved in Lutherans For Life and other pro-life organizations also, in a figurative way, are fighting giants. The giants are:

  • People with more power than you and I.

  • People with more money than you and I have.

But, they are also people that Jesus loves and died for!

We must remember that God doesn’t just love those of us who are For Life. And he doesn’t just love those of us who are already Christians. He also loves those who are against life! God loves the abortionist! He loves the young girl heading out tomorrow to have an abortion! And He loves her parents who encouraged her to choose death. He loves the women who has had an abortion and can’t forgive herself. He loves us all!

Reaching those who are against life will be accomplished in many and varied ways. Certainly we must pray for them—and educate them about life issues. We must speak the truth in love. We must also show them love. Showing love to those who are opposed to our message is often much more difficult.

Why should we show love? Because that is what Jesus did when he confronted those he met who were going in the wrong direction.

He didn’t show contempt or hatred to the woman caught in the act of adultery. He showed love and concern.

Showing love and concern doesn’t mean we can’t call sin a sin. Jesus told the woman to stop sinning. But, He didn’t stop with the Law. He told her of God’s forgiveness and grace—GRACE: God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense! The Gospel is for all people! It transforms lives in time for eternity.

So, let’s share the law and the Gospel with those who don’t agree with us—those who are going in the wrong direction!

Thank you for fighting giants! Your prayers and financial support are making a difference! Thank God that our God Loves Life!
