“Women have abortions because they care about motherhood.” It’s “excellent medicine.” (Elizabeth Newhall on MSNBC, October 25, 2010). When you hear such outrageous comments spoken and taken as if they are not outrageous at all, does it sometimes seem like Satan is winning in our world? Or, more personally, maybe it seems he sometimes wins in your family or in your own life.
Evil can appear so overwhelming. Therefore, this Sunday I recommend we all sing with extra gusto verse 3 of A Mighty Fortress is Our God.
Though devils all the world should fill,
All eager to devour us,
We tremble not, we fear no ill;
They shall not overpow’r us.
This world’s prince may still
Scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none.
He’s judged;
the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.
(Lutheran Service Book 656)
You know of the head crushing promise of Satan’s demise in Genesis 3:15. You know of its fulfillment. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). Satan remains our enemy, but a soundly defeated one.
The more evil seems to permeate our world, the more we need to share the message of its author’s defeat. LFL seeks to share that message and to equip others to do the same w hen it comes to the life issues. We want people to know the “one little word” that can send this purveyor of death fleeing. We want people to know the One who is the Word and whose cross-bruised heel stands victoriously upon the serpent’s ugly head—judged, deed done!
On behalf of the Life Team here at the Life Center, I wish you a blessed Reformation celebration this weekend.
P.S. Like many non-profits, LFL is having a tough year financially. So we invite your p rayers. If you are able to give a special Reformation gift to this Word-based ministry a boost, we would greatly appreciate it. Just click here.
