January 22, 2013

Today it would have been very easy for me to just stay in bed. The first thing I thought when I woke up this morning was, “It’s January 22…. I hate January 22.” As many of you know, January 22 marks the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision and the beginning of legal abortion in America. This year marks the 40th anniversary of that dark day.

For many on the other side of the debate, today is a day of victory and celebration but, for us, it is a day of mourning and remembrance. We can’t help but think of the 55 million lives that have been lost or of the mothers and fathers who live with the pain of guilt and regret. On today, of all days, it is very easy for us to slip into thoughts of hopelessness and saddness, as we remember the significance of the last 40 years.

But, today, especailly today, I am challenging you to not just remember the lives that have been lost, but to celebrate the lives that have been saved. Don’t focus on death today; Focus on Life!

Since the Roe vs. Wade decsions, dedicated For Lifers have been responsible for saving thousands of lives. There are children all over the country who are here today because of the love, compassion and sacrifice of those comitted to the cause of Life. There is so much good that is being done. There are educators and speakers, sidewalk counselors and pregancy centers, post-abortion recovery services and millions of volunteers who give of their time, talents and treasures. The number of people who are active in working towards an end to abortion is astounding! And we are winning!

So, while it is important to remember what we have lost, don’t stop there! Today, let the last 40 years inspire the next 40 years. Let it inspire you to work dilligently and pray faithfully, so that 40 years from today we will be enjoying a society where every life is sacred and everyone gets a chance to have a birthday.

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
