Dead Pigs or Living Men? by James M. Kushiner, The Fellowship of St. James
Our society today has a choice to make concerning salvation by Christ Jesus. But such choices require deep repentance. American society cannot pretend it has not aborted 55 million children or has not engaged in a destructive sexual rebellion against the divinely imprinted nature of sex and marriage. A national conscience cannot simply reboot; it will have to face the truth about its sins if it is to be truly converted.
Rather than admit that we have sinned against the Lord, and ask for his help and healing, our land increasingly resembles the country of the Gadarenes. Remember that chilling and strange story? (Mark 5:1-20)
A man possessed by demons is living among the tombs, abusing his own body by cutting it with stones, and terrifying the inhabitants of Gadara. He is a symbol of the culture of death in its desecration of the human being, made in the image of God. Jesus heals the man, while allowing 2,000 (unclean) pigs to be possessed by the demon “Legion” and drowned in the sea.
The inhabitants of Gadara come and find the man with Jesus; he is seated, clothed, and in his right mind. Jesus has healed his mind, body, and nakedness, and has delivered him from the tombs. The citizens of Gadara, upon seeing this, beg Jesus to depart! They find the Lord troubling and unsettling. The dead pigs are a wound on their economy.
After Gadara, Jesus Christ delivered the world itself from sin and death. Through the preaching and witness of his apostles and those who followed them, pagans were converted from works of the devil involving death and abuse of the body: infanticide, abortion, crucifixion, gladiator spectacles, cult prostitution, sexual licentiousness, and so on. Their minds were enlightened by the true Light, the Logos in creation, as they developed science, sacred architecture, art, and music. Like the Gadarene demoniac, they were delivered from the dominion of darkness and death into the kingdom of light and life.
But the public square in America is quickly becoming a new Gadara. The healed man has become sick again. The body politic is increasingly under assault from abortion, euthanasia, sexually transmitted diseases, sex-reassignment surgery, pornography, sex trafficking, and so on. It has lost its mind: witness the absurdities of the trans-sexual bathroom craze. And so our Gadarene leaders had asked Jesus to leave their district. To have him return and protect the unborn and teach chastity would be very troubling to them. Repentance would cost much humility.
But that is just what we need; that is to say, we need more preaching of Jesus Christ, more apostolic teaching, and more gospel witness to the truth. That’s why I am motivated to ask readers once again to please send some financial help our way. Touchstone is making a difference by not backing down on the issues, thus encouraging Christian readers living in New Gadara. Together we must stand strong.
