It now brings with it many opportunities for churches within a widespread area to reap the benefits of these new organizations as they provide life-affirming programs, events, and educational opportunities to those they serve. Terri Skoog – 2024 LFL Regional Conference Southeast

Recorded Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winter Garden, Florida.

Presentation – Terri Skoog – Gifts in Dementia

There are often difficult conversations about the value of life and challenges associated with dementia, but when we understand how to respond to the changing skills our friends and family members are experiencing, we uncover gifts along the way. This presentation will share how a strength-based approach brings hope and grace to the life of those experiencing dementia. It will identify what cognitive skills are lost and which are kept—and why it matters. We will explore how we can support life, purpose, and peace to make the journey more comfortable for everyone. Participants will understand that dementia takes away some cognitive skills, not all, and learn the basics to recognize the pattern, understand that from the pattern of skills kept and lost emerge strengths and abilities otherwise obscured in usual human experiences, and recognize that “dementia behavior” reflects human emotional needs, not a disease or medical symptom. Participants will develop an awareness that dementia can be worked with to enhance quality of life for both the person experiencing it and their companions.
