How often have you heard people say abortion is wrong but it should be O.K. in the case of rape or incest? Should abortion be legal for cases of rape? Unfortunately, many pro-lifers have accepted the argument that it would be just too traumatic for these women to carry a baby conceived in this way. They miss the point that taking the life of this baby is also a very traumatic event with long-term negative consequences.

Sin brings death and destruction. The sin of abortion brings death to a unique, unborn child. It also brings destruction to other lives-destruction of relationships, of families, of faith. Abortion is a life-shattering tragedy. It devastates women, men, grandparents, brothers, and sisters who carry sorrow for a child they will never know, or guilt for a child they rejected.
Being a neighbor seemed important to Jesus. According to Him, the second greatest commandment ever given is “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The only thing greater than this is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:28-31). Being a neighbor ranks pretty high! Asking—as Mr. Rogers so melodiously did—“Won’t you be my neighbor?” is a grand request indeed.
There is hope in Christ for those who grieve the loss of a child through abortion.
