“Lord of nations, you use elections as a way of guiding events in our world and providing for your people. Grant that our election day may be calm and upright. May elected officials be filled with a sense of awe and responsibility as they strive to help and protect the citizens in their care. May citizens live in respect for one another and honor those who are elected so that we might live together in peace. Amen.” (“Meditations,” Volume 63, Number 4)
Pray for All People – “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)
“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” (Psalm 2:10-11 ESV)
Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, through Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, You have made us citizens of the new heavens and earth, heirs of Your everlasting reign over creation, and treasured members of Your own household. You have also given us life in this physical land as a token of Your abundant grace. And You have instituted governing authorities as Your ministers, to secure our welfare and mediate Your temporal blessings. As we take part in elections this day, motivate us with faith in Your providence and love for our neighbors. Guide our minds to cast votes for those candidates who will best lead us in establishing and preserving safety, fairness, and freedom for all who reside here, especially the most vulnerable among us. Fill us with Your own charity to treat each other with respect despite our disagreements about what and whom most effectively serves the common good. Grant our nation Your peace and protection from all that would divide and destroy her both from without and from within, and strengthen us to put our ultimate trust not in princes but in Your forgiveness and resurrection, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
