News and Notes by Rev. Dr. James I. Lamb Referring to the rapid, uncontrolled growth of embryonic stem cells in lab animals, I asked, “So what do you call out of out-of-control rapidly replicating cells?” “A teenager!” was an answer I received recently! Well, I suppose there is some truth in that, but they are much more. I recently spent over a week with 3,000 “out-of-control, rapidly-replicating cells”—1800 of them at the AFLC Free Lutheran Youth conference in Estes Park, Colorado, and 1200 of them at the Higher Things youth conference in Normal, Illinois. The settings were strikingly different—mountains vs. cornfields. I enjoy both. The tone was different—celebratory vs. reverent. I enjoy both. The youth, however, were the same, and I was impressed with them in both places. Lutheran youth are alive and well! Lutheran youth are concerned about the life issues and want to learn. Many of them have learned and are quite articulate. Their questions reflected that they have thought critically about these issues. Often times during the question and answer period after someone asked a question, I would say to the group, “So, what do you think?” I would get very good answers. These young people also spent time at the LFL display looking at and taking our materials—and actually reading them! One girl in Illinois came back for more. “I read all the ones I took yesterday.” They were very complimentary of our materials and the presentations we did at the conferences. They liked the fact that they were easy to understand. Many times I heard comments like, “I never really understood this stem cell stuff, but now I get it.” For the first time, LFL offered T-shirts at both of these gatherings. Members of the Life Team here created a T-shirt using an acronym for Life: L.I.F.E. Living In Faith Everyday. The Bible verse on the back read, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12 NIV). The fact that we sold so many, and that the young people wore them during the conference, speaks to their convictions. My babies also proved to be a big attraction. Those soft-touch fetal models received a lot of attention! I had girls who would come back every day just to hold them awhile. These babies sparked questions. “At what stage is abortion permissible?” The look of shock always followed my explaining that Roe v. Wade legalized it in all nine months of pregnancy. “At what stage can we survive outside the womb?” “Is she really sucking her thumb?” “How could anyone destroy something like this?” We spent much time huddled in groups who were holding babies talking about this gift of God and about His knitting-and-forming hands at work in the womb. I hope you can sense my enthusiasm and delight in the opportunity to interact with these “out-of-control, rapidly-replicating cells.” Undoubtedly I gained more than they ever did. I thank you for your help in making it possible. We could not travel to these places and provide free materials without your consistent prayers and financial support. You help us use God’s Word of Life to make an impact on these young people. I am convinced that they in turn will engage and make an impact on our culture. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Summer seems to be the season for weddings, which means “love is in the air.” But do we really know what Real Love is? Do the youth in our congregations understand what real love is? Do the married couples in our congregations understand what real love is, and what the role is for each partner? The RFL site has numerous resources that touch on each of these subjects. Life Blog: On the main page of the RFL site there is a link to the LFL Life Blog. Chuck Colson has an article titled, “The Sanction of Eros”, which discusses the difference between eros type of love and Agape love in marriage. This article points out that defining love changes the focus in the marriage relationship. Family Living: Essays and articles section of Family Living has an article titled, “Biblical Manhood and Womanhood” by Linda Bartlett. This article shows the roles of a Christian man and woman, youth, young adults, and for those in a marriage relationship. Christian Responsibility: Bible Study titled, “The Proverbial Family,” by Rev. J. David Wende. Pastor Wende’s Bible study touches on the importance of the marriage relationship and how it affects the breakdown in the family so prevalent today. Christian Responsibility: Essays and Articles, “The Goodness of Marriage” by Dr. James Lamb. Goes back to the beginning to Genesis, and looks at what God intended the man and woman relationship to look like at creation. Sexual Purity: Worship Resources: “Purified for Purity” by Dr. James Lamb delves into, “Living In Purity in a world where everything is permissible.” LFL Resources on love and marriage can be ordered at www.cph.org. 1.LFL Marriage Statement

Adopted in Christ – National Lutherans For Life Conference
Before we know it, it will be time for our 2011 National Lutherans For Life Conference!
Be sure to check out the 2011 National Conference page. Of course, you can register online, but there are also some great interviews with keynote speaker Dr. Russell Moore and singer Heather Ruesch.
Date: August 5-6, 2011
Where: Irving, Texas
Theme: Adopted in Christ
Scripture: “[W]hen the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” Galatians 4:4-5 (ESV). Learn More and Register Online
This year’s conference will focus on helping participants grow in their understanding of what it means to be Adopted in Christ and how this action of our heavenly Father affects our relationships with one another and the manner in which we deal with life issues in our congregations. The keynote speaker is Russell Moore, author of the book Adopted For Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches. Workshop topics include a panel with a birth mother, adoptive parent, and adopted child and will also cover embryo adoption, foreign adoption, foster care, and pastors and politics.
One way to support LFL and help keep conference costs under control is to include a Witness Sponsorship in the conference book―and encourage others to do the same! Check out these links for more info:
The conference is also a great opportunity for exhibitors. Find out more at this link:
