Equipped and Encouraged
by Jerilyn Richard, director of RFL

Lutherans For Life is truly blessed to have faithful, dedicated supporters—both those who give generous financial gifts and those who give of their time and talents. Our grassroots—those we call LFL’s “hands and feet”—invest much of their time to life issues. Some have been in service to the Lord for many years, and some are just beginning. ALL of them need equipping, and encouragement!

This past March, our wonderful state presidents had the opportunity to be “equipped and encouraged” through a Gospel-motivated workshop: two days in St. Louis (see below) of excellent training with Churches for Life president, Pastor Doug Merkey. Pastor Merkey emphasized “ministry flows from relationships” and that first and foremost is our “relationship with Jesus.” He explained how walking in the Gospel is vital to a healthy ministry. “When grace and truth balance, ‘fruit happens’ as a result of being Gospel-motivated.”
We also learned ways to build a healthy, Gospel-motivated Life Team. Here is what a few participants had to say about the training (available to all our Life Teams and Life Advocates):

  • “Helps bring into focus my specific role as a leader.”

  • “Gospel-motivated focus—awesome.”

  • “Recognize a successful team follows God’s plan, living in His grace. I am excited to share this Life Team vision with my board.”

Renewal For Life® offers more than just resources on a website. Our prayer is that we can come alongside you and your congregation to help you build a fruitful, Christ-centered ministry (Psalm 32:9; Ephesians 3:20, 21).

Renewal For Life Resources

There is a new section that has been added to the Renewal For Life site: What is Renewal For Life? There are a number of promo clips that can be used in your congregation to help educate congregants on what Renewal For Life is, and why it is important to implement it in your Life ministry.

A refresher! The RFL site has a number of resources in the Life Advocate Training link! You can access all the training resources on the What is Renewal For Life? page. The right hand side of the page is the Life Advocate Training link. Here are a few suggestions you can use to further educate you and your Life Team.

Churches for Life: LFL has partnered with Churches for Life to offer you in-depth, Gospel-motivated training for Life Advocates and teams. More information can be found at this link.

Audio and Video: LFL’s new For Life DVD is offered on the RFL site. You can also view the extras that were included. One suggestion would be to use the interview with Jim and Laverne Santangelo to help educate people on the realities of post-abortion healing.

Online Workshops: LFL hosted a workshop that included a number of speakers touching on various life issues. The video titled, Life Issues In The Pew, is lead by Dr. Kevin Voss, from the Concordia Bioethics Institute, connects bioethics to the church. There are a number of informative videos in this section. The notes from each lecture is included on the site also.

Paraclete: All issues of the Paraclete can be found at this link. If you have missed an issue, or want to review a past one that you no longer have available, you can find them here.

Starting to Plan: The Starting to Plan series, is a good place to begin maneuvering through the RFL site. There are 7 series to help you and your Life Team get started.

Teaching Tools: In the Teaching Tools section, you will find 4 PowerPoint presentations varying from creation to end of life.

Marriage – A Statement by Lutherans For Life: There has been a lot of discussion in the news lately regarding the institution of marriage. Marriage – A Statement by Lutherans For Life, based on God’s Word, can be found on the Renewal For Life site at RFLonline.org/Family Living/essays and articles. You can also purchase the brochures from CPH.

Youth Projects

Video Idea: One idea you can implement at a Lutheran school or youth group is to have a YouTube video contest. You can have your own rules, or use the guidelines featured in the spring 2011 edition of Directions.
