Abortion in Style

The 2006 edition of the "AP Stylebook"
[The Associated Press Stylebook 2006] lists these editorial rules for the term abortion [page 5]:

“Use anti-abortion instead of pro-life and abortion rights instead of pro-abortion or pro-choice. Avoid abortionist, which connotes a person who performs clandestine abortions.”

The person who sent this to me asked, “Am I jumping to conclusions in thinking that these ‘official’ editorial rules are slanted to place a positive spin on abortion and a negative one on pro-life?”

No, there is no conclusion jumping here! Such “style rules” are definitely and intentionally designed to be slanted to the pro-death side. (Please note my violation of the “rules”!) Lutherans For Life is very conscious of this intentional slant and the use of such “politically correct” terms. We are also aware that it is nothing new.

Scripture talks of this deception and those who practice it:

“How horrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who turn what is bitter into something sweet and what is sweet into something bitter”

(Isaiah 5:20 GWFL).

Scripture also admonishes God’s “people of light” to do something about it:

“Have nothing to do with the useless works that darkness produces. Instead, expose them for what they are” (Ephesians 5:11 GWFL).

Lutherans For Life desires to equip people with the truth so they can do something about such nonsense as pro-death “style rules.” But it is not enough to scream and yell and try to bring the dastardly doers of dark deeds to their downfall. We must also bring them to
the Light.

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12 NIV).

Lutherans For Life desires to equip people with the truth of God’s Word so they can do something that helps others see how the Light of the World speaks to the life issues and can make a difference in this world of darkness.

Exposing the deeds of darkness and sharing the Light of Life—that is the unique ministry of LFL. We could always use your help in doing so.
