Dear Friends of Life,

 

Lutherans For Life is pleased to once again make available a comprehensive set of materials for observation of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The official date for Life Sunday 2004 is January 18. However, our materials may be used at any time during the year.

 

This year’s materials center on Jeremiah 29. God brings a message of hope to His exiled people. It was not a "quick fix" as offered by false prophets. No, the exile would last 70 years. But God would restore them. He would work these circumstances into His plan for His people and into His eternal purpose.

 

God is still a God of hope. When facing circumstances like an unplanned pregnancy, it is understandable to imagine the worst. It is easy to listen to the "quick fix" solution. It is hard to see any hope. Women and men involved in an abortion imagine the worst as well when the reality of that decision sinks in. They wonder if they can be forgiven. It is hard to see any hope. But God has a plan. He has a plan for unborn children and for His people who have made mistakes. God "is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Ephesians 3:20). This material will give you an opportunity to teach about God’s plan and God’s power.

Rights and Righteousness • 1 Corinthians 6:12, 20

Rev. Dave R. Garwick, Christ Lutheran Church, Maple Plain, Minnesota, tells us that what Paul is talking about in these verses is the idea of "rights that are not righteous." He parallels this with the often-heard sentiment of today, "I have my rights" and applies it to abortion.

A God Acts Kindly Toward His People Jeremiah 29:10-14

Rev. North P. Sherrill, Jr., Zion Lutheran Church, Kearney, Nebraska, has a Down Syndrome son. He knows first hand about the power of a gracious God. He writes, "In our precious baby, we have seen how kindly God acts toward His sinful people." He develops this text based on that thought.

More than You Can Imagine Ephesians 3:20-21

Rev. Dr. James I. Lamb, Executive Director of National Lutherans For Life, develops the idea of this text that God’s power is more than we can imagine! Not only that, Paul says this power is at work within us! We sin when we limit the power of God in our lives. God’s power is at work when we are in difficult situations. His power is at work when we make mistakes. (Power Point slides are also available for this sermon.)
